We’re In The Home Stretch

We're entering the home stretch on our cabin build in beautiful Kenoza Lake! With just about a month left in the construction process, all the main systems are now installed, and we're focusing on the finishing touches that will transform this structure into a cozy retreat. The countertops are going in soon, followed by sinks, plumbing fixtures, appliances, and the wood stove that will be the heart of the space during those crisp Catskills evenings.

As site visits have become more frequent in these final stages, I've had more opportunities to explore the surrounding area, and I've fallen even more in love with this special corner of the Catskills. Just a three-minute drive from our cabin in Kenoza Lake lies the delightful village of Jeffersonville (affectionately known as "Jeff" by locals). This small but vibrant town has become a destination for those seeking an authentic Catskills experience, with a growing collection of shops, eateries, and community spaces that showcase the area's creative spirit.

At the heart of Jeffersonville's Main Street, you'll find Sullivan Sundries, a modern take on the traditional country store. Opened by owners David Conison, Rebecca Moyer, and Brian Sutton, this specialty food shop has quickly become a local treasure. The trio pooled their resources, talents and love of good food to open a modern version of the country store in the old Jeffersonville Hardware Store building.

Sullivan Sundries offers an impressive selection of specialty foods, international ingredients, artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, and more. Their carefully curated offerings include everything from premium fish sauce to beautiful cutting boards, creating a culinary experience that brings global flavors to our little corner of the Catskills. Their friendly, knowledgeable staff make visiting a pleasure, and their carefully selected products make it a perfect stop for stocking your cabin with delicious treats during your stay.

Inside Sullivan Sundries, you'll discover Bloom Coffee, a specialty coffee shop that offers the perfect morning pick-me-up. This cozy coffee spot has been making a name for itself in the community since opening. Whether you're grabbing a quick coffee to go or starting your day with a leisurely brew, Bloom Coffee provides quality coffee in a welcoming atmosphere.

Toast is another must-visit spot in Jeffersonville that embodies the town's community-focused spirit. This welcoming wine bar and brunch spot is dedicated to celebrating food, community, and sustainability, with a focus on local partnerships and environmentally friendly practices. Toast serves as a vibrant gathering space, bringing people together over great food and connection. Located at 4893 NY-52, Toast offers both delicious brunch options and evening wine bar experiences, making it a versatile spot to visit throughout your stay. Their commitment to sustainability and local partnerships reflects the values that make the Catskills such a special place, and their warm atmosphere makes you feel instantly at home, whether you're starting your day with a leisurely brunch or unwinding with a glass of wine in the evening.

Book lovers won't want to miss Ratty Books, a charming children's bookstore that opened on Halloween 2023. Owner Caitlin Kranz Yaccino created this shop with a British cozy atmosphere, naming it after the character Ratty from the 1908 children's novel "The Wind and the Willows." This curated books & bits shop nestled in the beautiful Western Catskills offers picture books and oddments for children and those young at heart. The cool-blue interior filled with stuffed animals and handmade goods creates a magical environment that invites you to slow down and rediscover the joy of children's literature. Even if you're not traveling with little ones, Ratty Books is worth a visit for its growing collection of adult books, nostalgic charm, and thoughtfully selected inventory that reminds us all of the magic found in childhood reading.

When you're ready for a satisfying meal, head to Tavern on Main. This restaurant offers classic American dishes with a creative flair, featuring craft beer, cocktails, wine, and locally sourced ingredients. Their summer patio dining is a particular highlight, allowing you to enjoy the pleasant Catskills evening air while savoring your meal. The menu features tempting options like flame-grilled burgers topped with their signature bacon onion jam on a Jeffersonville Bake Shop challah roll, hearty salads with local ingredients, and perfectly prepared seafood dishes. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the area, with hearty meals that showcase the bounty of the region and a welcoming atmosphere that epitomizes Jeffersonville hospitality.

The Catskills region comes alive in the summer with vibrant farmers markets, and the Jeffersonville Sunday Market is part of this wonderful tradition. These community gatherings bring together local producers, artisans, and food vendors to create a true celebration of regional bounty. The market provides a perfect opportunity to meet locals, discover authentic regional products, and experience the genuine character of the Catskills. Nothing beats a Sunday morning stroll through the market, coffee in hand, browsing fresh produce and handcrafted goods while chatting with the passionate people who make this area so special.

As Cecile E. Cox famously noted when coining the term "Charmed Circle" for this special region, there's something magical about this corner of the Catskills. But while Cox may have focused on the area's renowned fly fishing, we've come to appreciate that the charm extends far beyond.

The true magic of the Charmed Circle lies in its slower pace of life, offering a genuine retreat from the hustle and bustle of our everyday worlds. It's found in the incredible people who have chosen to make this area their home, opening unique shops and businesses that reflect their passions and values. It's present in the community of artists who draw inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding us.

This is more than just a scenic destination—it's a charming cultural hub where connections are made, creativity flourishes, and time seems to move at a more human pace. And soon, our cabin will be ready to welcome you to experience all that the Charmed Circle has to offer.

Stay tuned for our official opening announcement—we're just a few short months away from inviting you to create your own memories in our special corner of the Catskills!
